About Gartocharn

The village lies within the beautiful Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and is probably better known as being the location of Duncryne, known locally as the Dumpling as it has a similarity in shape to the well known Scottish fare, the Cloutie Dumpling. It's a very special little hill.

Although small, with a population of some 700+, Gartocharn retains many of its original features and rural way of life, whilst the bustle of the modern day is but a few miles away. An idyllic setting for everyday country folk who like an occasional swerve into the fast lane of life or, indeed, for the tourist who, after a couple of days of inclement Scottish weather, might also feel the need to make that swerve!

For some history of the area there is a very interesting old book called Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine and the Trossachs described by George Eyre-Todd, which is conveniently available for reading online. There is also local historical information available on The Vale of Leven website.
